No private universities…
“There are no private, not-for-profit, research universities anywhere in the world“.
This earth-shattering revelation was made by Mr. G. Stathakis on April 1, 2006 in the Greek daily Avgi. No, it was not an April Fool’s day joke. Mr. Stathakis reiterated his position on April 13, 2006 in response to a letter to the editor sent by a newspaper’s reader who beged to differ.
Mr Stathakis is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at the University of Crete. He did post-graduate work at Queens College in New York and at Harvard University. In spite of his experience in the US, Mr Stathakis failed to discover private, not-for-profit, research universities in this country.
If you are interested in reading Mr. Stathakis’ articles, in Greek, here they are:
- original article published on April 1, 2006;
- letter to the editor challenging Mr. Stathakis assertions that there are no private universities, published on April 12, 2006;
- Mr. Stathakis’ response to above letter, affirming his belief that there are no “private, not-for profit, research universities, anywhere in the world“, published on April 13, 2006.

May the gods have mercy on his students.
